Glossary of Technological terms
Briefs: These describe a desired technological product. These consist of a conceptual statement and a set of specifications. The teacher may initially provide the students with a Given Brief written to guide the students through the technological practice. Students will research and undertake planning for practice to produce an initial brief and a final brief which takes into account the stakeholders changing needs, material availability or skill level.
Brief Development: An ongoing process considering refinements and developments to the given teacher brief in order to develop a final brief to meet the needs of the stakeholder.
Conceptual Statement: A written description of who will be using the product, what the product is to be uses for, where it is to be use and why it will be used.
Specifications: A detailed description for the construction, appearance or performance of a product. These must be able to be measured. ( e.g. 1 metre of 5mm ribbon)
Attributes: A property, quality or feature of a product. e.g: colourful, practical
Stakeholders: A person or group having a stake of interest in the success or use of a product.
Mock-up: A model of a product used for experimental reasons.
Prototype: A full scale operational model that includes all components of a final brief.
Planning for Practice: Identifying key factors and stages to develop an outcome including possible solutions, existing ideas, materials and equipment available, skills and knowledge are needed.
Outcome development: The trialling and production part of technological practice. May include plans, sketches, models etc.
Evaluation: A judgment of the worth or quality of the product.
